WhatsApp Cloud API: messaging features and setup
Meta’s developer interface for connecting WhatsApp to business systems. Unlike an app for manually managing conversations, it is an infrastructure component that requires you to build event ingestion, access management, and error handling.

Overview
WhatsApp Cloud API is a foundation for developing a messaging service, so you need to build around it the capabilities a ready-made system provides to agents: message ingestion, customer matching, record keeping, and a handling interface. Sending is only part of the process; you need to track status and connect incoming replies to business context. A commerce system, for example, must retain message and order IDs to determine what was sent and to whom. The design should also account for an event arriving again and for an expired authorization.
Features
- Programmatic sending of text and media messages
- Interactive messages for business processes
- Management interfaces for the business account and messages
Business uses
- An order confirmation sent automatically after an event in a commerce system
- Receiving a customer reply and updating its handling status in a service system
Getting started
- Set up a development environment and test sending and receiving a message with a test number before connecting a production number.
- Connect event ingestion and check how message ID, customer number, and order ID are stored together in your system.
- Resend a test event and check duplicate prevention, then track delivery status and the incoming reply before connecting the agent interface.
What to check
- Plan how to handle duplicate events, retries, and delivery status.
- Check template policies, billing, and permissions in the Meta account that holds the number.
