REST is an architectural style for implementing network services (APIs). Its central idea is to define a resource whose state changes through interactions between a provider and a consumer, usually over HTTP.

In business automation

REST helps you think about an API in terms of resources such as a customer or order, and the actions performed on them. For an integration, it is important to understand the specific service's endpoint, request method, and response structure.

Examples

These examples illustrate a possible workflow. Adapt the connections and rules to your own systems.

Business process example

A process looks up an order by ID using GET. After the shipment is approved, it sends an update request as specified by the service documentation and saves the status returned by the server for auditing.

HTTP steps and connections to REST interfaces can be built into a process.

What to check

  • Do not assume every API uses the same methods for updating or deleting. Read the system's interface contract.
