LiteLLM: artificial intelligence features and setup

An open-source AI gateway: an OpenAI-compatible interface, provider routing, and expense tracking.

Tool by the Otomatzia editorial team · source content checked on

Overview

LiteLLM lets you call different providers through an interface similar to OpenAI, route requests, and track expenses. It is useful when you have several models and your code should not need to know each provider's SDK separately. It can run as a gateway or a library. Before using it in production, check what happens when a target model is unavailable and which keys are stored in the process. Interface compatibility does not guarantee that every provider capability is available through the gateway.

Features

  • OpenAI-compatible interface for different providers
  • Model routing and expense tracking
  • Runs as an open-source library or gateway

Business uses

  • Switch models in an existing application without rewriting all the calls
  • Unified cost tracking across several model providers

Getting started

  • Connect one provider's test key through LiteLLM.
  • Set up a fallback route to a second model.
  • Check provider failures, budget overruns, and partial responses.

What to check

  • Check which parameters from each provider are actually supported by the gateway.
  • Keep keys out of code and check who can change routing.
