Hatchet: automation features and setup
An open source orchestration engine for AI agents, background tasks and critical workflows.
Tool by the Otomatzia editorial team · source content checked on
Overview
Hatchet keeps a history of every task and every state change, so you can run automatic retries, rerun manually and locate failures. It has SDKs for TypeScript, Python and Go, a managed service (Hatchet Cloud) and an option for self-hosting under the MIT license.
Features
- Retry with a configurable policy, including exponential backoff
- Running tasks at a future time and on a fixed schedule (cron)
- Durable tasks that pause, wait for an event or a specific time, and continue even after a failure
- Rate limits and concurrency policies for fair scheduling, so one user does not consume all the resources
- Open source under the MIT license, running locally with a single CLI command or on Kubernetes and Docker
- Monitoring, logs and OpenTelemetry for every task and workflow
Business uses
- Orchestrating an AI agent that makes several calls to a model and to tools
- A background task queue instead of a cron solution you built yourself
- A data pipeline with steps that must finish
Getting started
- Start with Hatchet Cloud or run locally through the CLI.
- Define one task as a function in the SDK language.
- Fail the task on purpose and check the retry in the dashboard.
What to check
- This is a tool for developers, not a visual builder like n8n.
- The website announced new usage-based pricing, so check the current price before choosing.
