Loop Over Items (Split in Batches)

A core n8n node that saves the incoming data and, with each iteration, returns a set number of items through its loop output, then combines all processed data on the done output.

In business automation

Most n8n nodes already process every item, so you need this node only for exceptions: nodes that read just the first item, batching API calls to avoid rate limits, or paging with the Reset option.

Examples

These examples illustrate a possible workflow. Adapt the connections and rules to your own systems.

WhatsApp template messages in batches

Send 500 template messages in batches of 20, with a Wait node between batches.

Reading feeds one at a time

Read several RSS feeds one at a time, as in the official docs example.

Paging through an API

Page through an API with Reset and an If node as the exit condition.

Relevant tools

n8n
The definition comes from the official n8n documentation on the Loop Over Items node.

What to check

  • A termination condition that never matches. The docs warn that your workflow execution will get stuck in an infinite loop.
  • Adding the node where n8n already iterates over items, which adds complexity for no gain.
  • Counting progress manually instead of checking the noItemsLeft context value.
