gRPC
gRPC (short for gRPC Remote Procedure Calls) is an open-source, cross-platform software framework for RPC. The gRPC software layer was originally created by Google. It uses HTTP/2 for data transport and Protocol Buffers as its interface description language.

In business automation
gRPC is an interface for calls between services over HTTP/2, with a defined message contract. In automation, it appears when an internal system exposes actions to another system in a binary format rather than through conventional REST.
Examples
These examples illustrate a possible workflow. Adapt the connections and rules to your own systems.
Internal pricing service for an order process
An order process needs the latest price from a pricing service. Instead of serving an HTML page, it calls a gRPC method with a product ID and receives an amount and currency according to the contract. Changing a field requires updating the contract on both sides.

- A regular HTTP connection is not gRPC. If the target uses gRPC, a translation gateway or a suitable node is needed. Do not assume the same URL will work.
What to check
- An automation tool that supports only JSON over HTTP/1 may not be able to call a gRPC service without a translation layer.
