Anthropic launches Claude Opus 5.5: stronger agents at 40% lower cost
Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in the Claude 5.5 family. The company says it leads in agentic coding, computer use and knowledge work, and costs about 40% less than Opus 5 on typical workloads. Pricing is $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, and cache reads, which make up most of the cost of agent work, are 60% cheaper. The model is available on all platforms, including AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, and there is also a fast mode in Claude Code. On Zapier's AutomationBench, which tests whether an agent can run real business workflows across connected apps, Opus 5.5 beat Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol at every effort level. Anthropic says the model delegates to subagents more effectively, stays on long tasks for many hours, and resists prompt injection better. It ships with a classifier that screens every action before it runs and an open-source sandbox that security teams can audit. Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 are due in the coming weeks.
