Encryption

Encryption is a cryptographic process for encoding information that converts its original representation, known as plaintext, into an alternative form known as ciphertext. Encryption systems generally use a pseudorandom encryption key generated by an algorithm.

In business automation

Encryption makes information readable only to someone with the appropriate key. In automation, it is relevant to documents, backups, and secrets passed between systems, not just a website password.

Examples

These examples illustrate a possible workflow. Adapt the connections and rules to your own systems.

Storing client files in a process

A process receives a contract and transfers it to storage. The file is stored encrypted, and the key is not written into the automation workflow. When the next step needs to read the file, it requests controlled access instead of downloading an unencrypted copy to email.

Supabase
The platform provides storage and a database with access controls; client-side encryption still requires a separate architectural decision.

What to check

  • Encryption without proper key management leaves files exposed to anyone with access to the server.
