In business automation

Credentials provide an authorized connection between a workflow and an external service. Storing them in a dedicated place makes it possible to use the same connection across multiple workflows and replace it without scattering secrets through code.

Examples

These examples illustrate a possible workflow. Adapt the connections and rules to your own systems.

Business process example

Several workflows update the same CRM through a configured organizational connection. When a key is replaced, the connection is updated and one workflow of each action type is checked before marking the transition complete.

Relevant tools

n8n
Credentials are managed separately from workflow business data and are used to connect to nodes.

What to check

  • Check who can use the credentials, not only who can view them. Permission to run a workflow can allow an action even without exposing the secret.
