MCP vs. API: Key Differences and When To Use Each
On September 10, 2026, the n8n blog compares MCP and API. An API suits deterministic integrations with fixed endpoints. MCP (developed at Anthropic in 2024) lets an agent discover tools at runtime through JSON-RPC. In production, both are usually used: MCP on top of API. In n8n you can call any REST API with HTTP Request, consume an external MCP server with MCP Client Tool on an AI Agent, and expose a workflow as an MCP server with MCP Server Trigger (including connecting sub-workflows as tools). Available on Cloud and self-hosted.
