How Block orchestrates Claude Fable across thousands of pull requests

Anthropic published an interview with Bradley Axen, head of AI capabilities at Block, about how the company runs large-scale code migrations. In his words, such a migration can include hundreds or thousands of pull requests across several code repositories, and Claude Fable 5 orchestrates the work across many sessions: it handles high-level planning such as data models and API specification, and delegates to up to dozens of smaller, cheaper models such as Opus and Sonnet the file edits and test runs. The whole setup is operated in Buzz, an open-source workspace for teams of humans and agents. At Block they stress that merging to the main branch and deploying to production remain in human hands, with approval from two humans, and that agents also run daily or weekly cleanup rounds of technical debt.
